94 people receive free medical care during medical mission

Location: Tabora, Tanzania | Period: 2007

PARTNERS: Independent US Volunteer surgeons

Empower 54 partnered with plastic and general surgeons to conduct a free surgical mission in the City of Tabora for children and adults.

During the program, minor procedures were conducted and over the counter supplements were given to those eligable to receive them.

50 children and 44 adults benefitted from this program.

110 people receive free corrective surgery

Location: Kwara State, Nigeria | Period: 2006

PARTNERS: EXXON-MOBIL, corporate organizations, Ministry of Health Federal Republic of Nigeria, Kwara State Government, Virgin Atlantic Airlines, Body Enhancement Ltd and Empower 54.

During this program, many surgeons with various specialization rendered various types of corrective surgeries for children and adults.

Some corrective surgeries performed were VVF (Vesico Vaginal Fistula) repairs, removal of tumors, cataract extractions, cleft lip and cleft palate, repaired burns and contractures, repair of hernias, removal of fibroids and ovarian cysts, rebuilding of several deformities, etc.

In addition to rendering free operations, the beneficiaries who came from all over the country were given donated clothing and non-perishable foods.

Our Patron, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, did a special video recording for us inviting medical volunteers to come to Nigeria and participate in the program.

The video was aired on CNN for two months and many international and national medical personnel volunteered during the medical mission. 

110 patients were treated during the two weeks program.

Reconstructive Surgery for underprivileged children

Due to stigma and myths, many chidlren are abandoned at birth due to birth defects. Shell/SNEPCO Oil corporation sponosred a medical mission specially designed to cater to the needs of childen with birth defects in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.

The organization select the beneficiaries from Empower 54's large waiting list of underprivileged children with various birth deformities in need of Plastic reconstructive surgery.

5 children with birth defects benefitted from this program.

Exxon-Mobil Customized reconstructive surgery for children with birth defects

Reconstructive surgery for Victims of contaminated kerosene explosions

Location: Edo State, Nigeria | Period: 2004

PARTNERS: Edo State Government and Body Enhancement Ltd

The Edo State government engaged Empower 54 (formerly known as BEARS Foundation) to conduct a medical mission specifically for surviving victims of contaminated kerosene explosions that occurred in the State in 2001.

Empower 54 brought highly trained and experienced plastic surgeons and operating nurses from Beverly Hills, California, USA to Okada, Edo State to perform surgeries and train local surgeons while treating the selected patients.

Some of the deformities corrected on the 36 patients during the duration of the surgeries were: Axilla contractures, hand, elbow, chin and neck contractures, severe contractures of both legs, Ecthopions, massive keloids, severe foot contractures, etc.

36 patients were treated within the one-week program. The patients were men, women and children ranging from the ages of 3 to 68 years.

20 children receive free reconstructive surgery

Location: Nigeria | Period: 2003

PARTNERS: Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), River State Government, Kano State Government, and Body Enhancement Ltd.

Our maiden humanitarian program brought awareness to causes, prevention and plight of children with Congenital deformities such as Cleft Lip, Cleft Palate and Syndactyly (Webbed fingers) in Nigeria.

Due to societal stigmas, many children with birth defects are considered outcasts in society.

During our medical mission, 20 children between the ages of 3 months to 15 years underwent free reconstructive surgery during the 5 days program.
